Through Rain, Sleet, and Snow, but not a rough economy?! It seems that every company is being faced with cutbacks and it now appears the post office may be no different. Massive deficits could force the post office to cut out one day of mail delivery.
In 2008 the post office moved roughly 202 billion pieces of mail (9 billion less than the year before). Even with a rate increase in postage, the post office may still not have enough money.
An annual appropriation rider requires the post office to deliver six days a week. The postmaster told Congress on Wednesday he would like to look at delivering mail five days a week.
That doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get mail on Saturday either. Tuesday could be a light day so that one could go. Hey, why not rotate at random – so you never really know if you are going to get mail or not – it will be like Christmas!
It is estimated the post office could save anywhere from $1.9 billion to $3.5 billion per year. The current rate is 42-cent for a first class stamp.
I don’t think I would care if they cut back one more day. Sometimes I forget to check my mail and by the time I get to the mailbox, all the junk mail is stuffed in so tight that I have to use two hands to pull it out. Plus, I could use it as an excuse if I forget to send a bill in on time, “It is the post office’s fault! I didn’t get my bill in time!”
