Apparently George just had to fill up his own car at the ranch or something.
He has said with the rising price in gas, we should end the 27-year band on coastal drilling for oil and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
In the news conference at the White House, Bush said there was “no excuse for delay” in lifting the ban.
So where are the Presidential candidates on this issue?
Well, McCain has made a complete u-turn on the issue and is favor of it stating, “We must take control over our own energy future…” Historically, he as very much opposed drilling in coastal waters.
Obama, at least at the time of this writing, was against the offshore drilling. Basically stating McCain is simply going through “political posturing.”
Analysts believe drilling offshore will do little to reduce our dependence on imported oil.
So, what do you think? Should we lift the ban and go back to drilling offshore? Click “Comments” below.

Is he just trying to make something positive happen before he leaves? Can’t wait to see who he Pardons.
I see it as a positive move.
Why not drill anywhere there is oil. If there is enough here in the U.S.A. then we should access it.
Do we not drill here in case we are ever cut off from foreign supply.
Is this considered a part of our oil reserves?
Adam
That is a good question Adam.
Oil reserves are the estimated amounts that can be recovered under normal conditions.
I believe the offshore is included in that figure. (As was the big Alaska North Slope discovery.) Since then, there has not been a sizable discovery (with the exception of the Bakken Formation in Montana which required horizontal drilling).
The estimate is that we could go three years without any foreign oil.
We apparently have enough oil shale for 100 years – and it is not considered part of the reserves.

Thanks Robert. For what it is worth, it is pretty much a consensus offshore drilling will not greatly effect the amount of oil we have in the US or the price.
