Too Much of a Good Thing…

I tend to avoid places that have signs or advertisements like “All You Can Eat.”

My concern is that I don’t know whether to be afraid or consider it a challenge. As I get older the latter becomes less important than say, watching my weight. But even I could not pass up “All You Eat Stone Crabs” at a local restaurant.

How do you approach such a daunting task? Do you eat during the day? Do you ignore their well-placed basket of bread there to distract you? I just don’t know the rules and America seems to be very much in tune with the “All You Can Eat” restaurants; they are all over the place!

Coincidentally, the number of Americans that are clinically “Obese” has increased exponentially (no pun intended) over the last several years. What is the classification of obese anyway? How can we solve this problem?  Well…

It’s calculated on body mass index …. it measures height against weight.

BMI =

( kg/m² )(weight in pounds * 703 )

————————————

height in inches²

- or take your weight (in kilograms),

and divide by your height (in meters) squared.

Below 18.5 – Underweight

18.5 -24.9 – Normal

25 – 29.9 – Overweight

The Solution

More and more American’s are falling into the “Overweight” category. How do we battle such a growing problem?

The answer, of course, is to re-classify the definition of “overweight.” If 25 is currently the cut-off as indicated above, maybe we need to move it to 27 or 28.2; then less people will be in the “overweight” category as they will now qualify for the “normal” category. If you don’t like the results, raise the bar!

Of course I am kidding but I highly suspect that somewhere, deep in a secret government think-tank, someone is working on just that idea.

The answer, by the way, to my original “All You Can Eat Stone Crabs” was 21 – I wouldn’t recommend it but would, most likely, do it all over again!

Only 21?? Oh c’mon Godfather…I’m out of shape (probably over the 25 mark now with my strange fatness) and my appetite has diminished severely over the years (which makes my fatness strange to me). But I think 21 stonecrabs is child’s play….I could beat that, if so challenged (21 1/2!!!)

As for the BMI…this is a strange determination equation. Some of your fittest super-athletes come in over 25, and yet have little body fat….for instance I’m only 5’8 and weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 190ish. Now my bodyfat has probably gone off the charts, but you can find many a high school and college level defensive backs with similar stats on height and weight…how could you honestly use the BMI to determine that we’re both in serious weight trouble?

  2. Godfather says:

I don’t actually believe in BMI. It is one step away from the old insurance charts that told me at 6’2″ I should weigh 160lbs. I think I have steaks that weigh 160! The only true test is to do a body fat test (dunk tank being the best followed by calipers or electronic).

As for only 21 well, they were medium size and we did have bread, salad, wine, and garlic mashed potatoes as well.

Oh, spare me the useless details which maximize your eating efforts!!! LMAO!!!

  4. JustZ says:

Ok I must “weigh” in here. At 5’3″ and 124 pounds I ate 19 stone crabs at the same sitting with the Godfather. (I just let him eat two more than me so he could save face with “the girl”).

Godfather added: Apparently she forgets I have full editing abilities on this blog. I could have changed her number (above) to three, but let’s just say her 19 were much smaller…(that is my story and I am sticking to it).

    Rematch!

  5. Actually, they lowered the bar on the BMI a few years ago to bring it more in line with the rest of the world. In doing so, they created 30 million NEW overweight/obese people overnight, thus the obesity epidemic.

Remember when they did the same thing with cholesterol levels also, creating a huge market for statins with so many people now at risk of heart failure due to clogged arteries.

While I admit to being overweight, I am not obese, yet according to their BMI numbers I think I do fall under the obese category now.

And they can all KMFSTA before I’ll buy into their junk science. LOL

  6. Mike Lovell says:

I get the KMF and the A…..I dont follow the S and T in swfreedomlover’s comment.

  7. Godfather says:

Don’t look to me. In the text world I was lost after LOL and ROFL.

Let’s see…KMFSTA…. “Key Management Facility Soon To Arrive”

    - See, told you I couldn’t do this abbreviation thing…
