Still trying to get past all the crud regarding who has the larger flag on their plane or the latest “celebrity” videos and get to the real issues? Here are some cliff notes you can share with friends that may help you decide on the best choice for your vote…
The Economy
McCain – Would cut taxes on middle-class families by abolishing the Alternative Minimum Tax. Wants to decrease government spending. Wants to reform Social Security.
Obama – Wants to help middle-class struggling with rising cost but stagnant pay. Wants to reform healthcare and education. Wants to renegotiate free trade agreements.
War in Iraq
McCain – Voted for the 2003 invasion. Believes we should remain in Iraq. Says withdrawal could trigger genocide in the region.
Obama – Opposed the war in Iraq from the beginning. Wants phased removel of troops. Says there is “no military solution” in Iraq.
Iran
McCain – Would try to escalate economic sanctions. Won’t rule out military solution if necessary to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.
Obama – Would meet with Iranian leaders without preconditions. He says they may change behavior if they were given incentives.
National Security
McCain – Has been a leading voice in efforts to prevent the CIA from resorting to “cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment of prisoners.”
Obama – He has criticized the Patriot Act, but voted to re-authorize it in 2006.
Illegal Immigration
McCain – Co-Sponsor of bill, which offered amnesty to illegal immigrants as well as tougher border controls. Says undocumented workers already in US should be given citizenship.
Obama – Wants US-Mexico border to be better policed and impose stiffer penalties for employers that hire illegal immigrants. Believes that allowing illegal immigrants to gain citizenship is not amnesty if they pay a fine.
Abortion Rights
McCain – Says that the 1973 Supreme Court ruling (Roe v Wade) should be overturned. Would appoint sympathetic new judges and aid state efforts to boost adoption.
Obama – Says he trusts women to make their own choices in conjunction with their doctors or clergy.
Fine, I suppose this is where you look for some witty insights to my mind. A "bio" of sorts. Here is the deal... I ride motorcycles, smoke cigars, golf, kayak, fly, race my car through the mountains, write (a lot), and travel extensively. When it comes time to vote Americans need first to focus on morals in our elections and not be so selfish. I hear people saying they want health care (National Health Care that is) but maybe half or more of those people are trying to convince others that Obama is our man. How can anyone vote for a man or woman that tells you he has yours and my best interests in mind and that he is concerened about everyones health in our country when they have forgoten the most vulnerable of us all, the UNBORN. Obama says he can make the best decisions for our great country, but he doesn’t even know when life begins. Our courts have told us that if a mother and her unborn child were killed by another individual, that individual would face charges for a double homicide, they know that child is alive.
About the WAR, more Americans have been killed in our own country in one month than in the all the years of the Iraq war combined. If those unborn children, AMERICANS would have been given the chance to live, how many of them would vote for a president that agrees with the murder of the unborn. He and anyone who agrees with abortion, has declared war on those children, those unborn Americans.

OK, any of these “issues” are purely hypothetical. Once in office, our new President may do what they promised — or they may not.
We need to do a gut check, and pick someone who can govern with wisdom and provide leadership to us all. I don’t think that McCain can escape the way that he thinks. His age isn’t exactly THE issue, but his decision making process is, and how that was formed is important.

And as far as casualties in Iraq go Curt, I guess you must be just counting American deaths, which stand at just under 4,500. We do not have a body count on Iraqi deaths, but estimates range from 95,000 to 250,000. These non-combatant deaths are a direct result of American intervention in Iraq. Philosophically, this one is a hard one to for anyone to judge, the value of the life of the UNBORN in the US vs the value of the life of someone already BORN over in Iraq.
For the record, 200,000 people die in America every month; 93% from natural causes. So Curt, you are not quite correct to characterize that more Americans are killed in America in one month than in the entire Iraq war. Americans mostly die from natural causes, less than one percent are “killed” as in the sense of killed in Iraq. (So about 100,000 Iraqis have been killed as a result of American intervention over the past five years.)
Iraq had a population of 27 million at the start of the war. The US has a population of about 300 million. So you can do the math on the per capita death toll over there. I got these stats from the Social Security Admin and Wikipedia.
okay, women can make their own decision. who is mccain to say women cant get abortion. If that was the situation there would be millions of abondoned unfed, abused chldren. i am totally for Obama i agree with everything he has said. I cant believe anyone would be agaist abortion. If its not you.. dont worry about anyone else.

Thanks Angie, I agree with you. These others don’t know what the hell they’re talking about some of them! Abortion is right. Which would you rather have.. like angie said..a unfit mother who can barely take on a child or to prevent that by an abortion. Why do you care if its not YOU! Women get pregnant. IT HAPPENS! sometimes accidentally… just like you accidentally do something! Some of these young kids should not be having children but I think the decision is THEIRS and THEIRS alone. You have no buisness telling a woman what she can do with her body. But it does also go by your beleifs on when life begins. Many of you who probably are against abortion believe life begins @ conception while other believe it begins @ birth. Like Angie said, if its not you.. WHY ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT IT!!!??? Let these women be free & if us men are against abortion then use protection. Make the right choices. Be SMART!
