Obama: The First 100 Days…ok, Maybe 101

obama258Apparently the success (or failure) of a new President is determined in the first 100 days. Of course in reality what occurs in the first 100 days is setting in motion new polices and cleaning up those items that were already in the works.

On the plus side the new President will get credit for some things he didn’t have much to do with (such as some new changes in international aid). On the down side the new President will get blamed for items put in motion long before he hit office (such as gun/ammo control or the economy). Here is a quick overview of Obama’s first 101 days…

Jan. 20thBarack Hussein Obama becomes the 44th president of the US

Jan. 22nd – Announces the closing of Guantanamo Bay.

Jan. 29th – Blasts Wall Street executives for giving employees massive bonuses as the government was forking over billions in aid.

Feb 3rd – Tell TV news, “I screwed up” after two of his cabinet picks are forced to withdraw due to income tax improprieties.

Feb. 13th – Congress passes $787 billion stimulus bill.

Feb. 17th – Orders and additional 17,000 US troops to Afghanistan.

Feb. 27th – Announces that all US combat forces will be withdrawn from Iraq by August 2010.

March 2nd – Releases nine long-secret legal memos from the Bush administration outlining the broad interpretation of power.

March 9th – Expands guidelines for federal funding of stem-cell research.

March 19th – Appears on the Tonight Show (later apologizes for “Special Olympics” remark).

March 30th – Sets restructuring deadlines for GM and Chrysler

April 1st – First Presidential trip to Europe.

April 12thGets White House Dog (not from pound).

April 13th – Lifts some travel restrictions to Cuba

April 16th – Releases secret memos detailing CIA interrogation methods.

Of course there were many other items that went on, but really, who wants to type all that?

You left out the first promise he broke no one earning under $250,000/year would see “ANY new taxes of ANY kind”. He broke that one the minute he signed the SCHIP bill which raised the cigarette tax (the majority of smokers earn under $100,000/year), which raised manufactured cigarettes about 50% and raised the tax on loose cigarette tobacco by over 2,000%!

Of course the logic behind that is the most convoluted logic on the planet…..on one hand it will provide health insurance to millions of poor children (poor defined as in a family of 4 earning up to $85,000/year – obviously forgoing employer insurance; and children defined as up to 29 years of age). All while touting how this increase will “force” many to quit smoking. IF so many will quit (which is their goal anyway) who the hell is going to fund the SCHIP program? The non-smokers? They’ve already said no to that!

Sorry for the rant, but I’ve about had it with friggin special interest groups and this new “socialized” mentality.
