What in the world? TalibanTube

Fareed285In case you missed it, Fareed Zakaria had an interesting spot the other day regarding the Taliban. Although the focus of the spot is about their use of YouTube (and the internet) he did mention something I keep saying.

For a group that believes everything in the west is pretty much evil and should be avoided at all costs, they have no problem using the same technology they consider an abomination. By the way, guess who is hosting some sites for them? [Read more...]

Cash for Other Countries

Car285Now that the Cash for Clunkers programs is winding down, car dealers are in line to start complaining about poor sales. There is one thing I never understood…

Why did we not make it a requirement that you had to purchase a US made car to qualify for the program?

Toyota, Mazda, etc all cleaned up as “clunkers” rolled in as the owners purchased new cars. Money was spent, and then sent overseas to their respective company owner.

When Lincoln was building the railroad, he had the choice importing the steel from other countries or getting the steel locally. The steel, even at that time, was cheaper to import. Nonetheless, Lincoln figured even if we spend more money tapping our own steel, people would have jobs, and the money would stay here.

What happened to that type of thinking?

Obama Speaks to Schools? Demand Your Right to be Stupid

CensorChild285I have commented on a lot of off-the-wall stupid things people have done in this country. The Slow Bleed is an equal opportunity opinionated site. That means I have no problem pointing out stupid crap from either side of the aisle, any race, any religion (or lack thereof), and even stupid stuff I do. For some reason, this one seems to take the cake.

Today President Obama makes his speech directly to public schools. The announcement of his speech led to a massive amount of people (and schools) condemning the man. How dare the President of this great country talk directly to American students about things like “staying in school” and “raising the bar.” – What the hell is he thinking?

“Raise the bar?” My kid is OWED a nice life. (Special Slow Bleed Alert: Your kid is “owed” a big cup-o-jack). [Read more...]

Obama Complete School Speech

Prepared Remarks of President Barack Obama
Back to School Event

Arlington, Virginia
September 8, 2009

ObamaPortrait285The President: Hello everyone – how’s everybody doing today? I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I’m glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning. The End of Free Lyrics?

music-note285Besides some incredible music coming out of the mid’60’s a new trend emerged that was, musically, unlike any other. Unfortunately that trend is now in danger again.

I am talking about the record labels printing the lyrics with the LPs. Yes, I realize LPs are dead and gone along with 8-tracks, Cassette Tapes, and Mini-CDs. But how magical was it to actually know what was being sung?

The advent of smaller size delivery made it difficult to print the lyrics. So, a new generation was born.

To fill this gap Internet companies such as LyricWiki came along. A free service that would solve the “What the hell did they say?” question. Once again people would know what the artist said and for some artist, such as Pearl Jam or Bob Dillion, we wouldn’t have a clue otherwise.

But there is another benefit.

Having the lyrics available keeps some people from running around singing all the wrong words with authority. I have seen them – heck, I have even been one. These people need to be stopped.

So what is the problem?

Well, lyrics, like music and movies, are intellectual property. They have been copyrighted and you really are not allowed to print them without paying a royalty. So companies left and right like LyricWiki are being shut down for revealing what the singer sung.

Bummer.

Soon we may not know what Mika, Sting, or Dave Matthews are even talking about. Wonderful lyrics lost in the red tape.

I guess I will just go back to listening to “Who let the Snogs Out?” while thinking how to solve the pressing problem. Any ideas?

David Returns to Italy from US Tour

FatDavidAs I get ready, mentally, for my trip to Italy (don’t worry readers, it is not for awhile and I am pretty sure they have internet there) I am reminded of this picture.

Sure it is all done in photoshop, sure it is insulting to those who live off fast food or are actually buying into the “collectable buckets” being offered by Kentucky Fried Chicken but…

If David WAS real and DID tour the US,  here is what he would look like. [Read more...]
