Fifty Years of Math 1959 – 2009 (in the USA )

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her.. She stood there , holding the nickel and 3 pennies , while looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters , but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her , she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

Letter from 2076

futureletterDear Godfather,

The year is 2076 and America is celebrating its 300th birthday.

What I Have Learned About Humanity and Politics

political candidate uid 111I get about 50 emails a week from Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. Here is what I have learned about the human condition, the internet, and politics lately…

1. Absent factual information, both Political parties (and their followers) make crap up. Absent new information, stuff gets made up at a greater rate.

2. Information does not need to be factual; as long as it is emailed to someone it apparently becomes fact. People fuel their own fears without any help. Emails should come with the disclaimer: “Some of the information found in this email is complete fiction. Read accordingly.”

3. Blame can be pointed to whomever you choose; actual responsible parties need not apply.

4. Educated people just may be more dangerous than uneducated.

5. If you are a television personality, just keep increasing the severity of your comments until you get attention. Ratings will increase and the bar for future inane comments will have been successfully raised.

6. None of the problems in the US are black and white; surprisingly though, opinionated people think all the answers are.

7. If I am to believe emails: all Democrats are Socialist, all Republicans are Communist, and all Independents are simply not knowledgeable.

8. Age has nothing to do with wisdom, some children can only go downhill in their viewpoints as they get older.

Did I miss anything?
