What I am Thankful For…
November 23, 2008 by Godfather
Given Thanksgiving is this week; I was going to make a list of things I was thankful for. I am sure the list would have included the obvious – health, family, and Captain Crunch with Crunchberries. My mistake was I should have written the list in advance of coming up to North Carolina. Once again the Godfather is off the grid.
When I say “off the grid,” let me elaborate…
My cabin in North Carolina is very comfortable. We have firewood for the cold nights (and days at this point). We have running water, indoor plumbing, even a television with satellite which we never turn on (except for a Green Bay Packer Game).
What I don’t have is high-speed internet access. I am stuck on dial-up.
For those readers not old enough to remember dial-up or frankly those that have never had the pleasure of using dial-up internet you are really missing out. You really should try it once. Want to try it right now?
Take a piece of string and tie it to your computer (anywhere is fine). Now take the other end of the string and fasten it to a tin can. Stretch the string tight and surf the net to your hearts content – I will wait.
Yep, you guessed. Sure I am still thankful for family, health, etc. But at this very moment I am really thankful for high-speed internet – and wine. Oh wait, not only did I buy a cabin that doesn’t have high-speed internet, I also purchased a cabin in a dry county.
Before I close, I don’t want you to think it is all bad. I consider this therapy. I am hoping my time here gets me to slow down a bit. Gandhi said “there is more to life than increasing its speed.” I am going to guess Gandhi never had dial-up in a dry county but maybe I am missing the point.
So, if The Slow Bleed is a bit sparse on posts this week you will know why – I am running out of string.
Happy Thanksgiving.

The house we are renting this week is without any internet. I am having a panic attack just anticipating the 4 days I will not be able to check my email, facebook, news, or keep up on the blogs I’m following. I don’t know if the town will be dry, I’ll have to pack plenty of wine just in case.
Thanks Rachel, I forgot all about checking Facebook. There is another 3 hours I will spend online to view one page!
Green Bay Packer Games??? Just as I was starting to like your web site.
Just Kidding.
GO BEARS!!!
Chuck nooooo, a Bears Fan? And here I thought my “Bears Fan Blocker” was working fine! I guess I better contact my internet provider
You people and your NFC North Teams…..God help ya! (says the guy who loves the perenially horrible S.F. 49ers)
This year, I am thankful that I will get my Sweet Potato Casserole my mom makes for me, all that food that I will try to stuff into my ever-growing belly, only to grumble about how I shouldn’t do such things as I try to keep from exploding. I’m thankful too that my parents small town now has high speed internet, instead of that dial-up crap they were stuck with for the longest time. I’m thankful for wine…but for my mother…She was recently told of high cholesterol inside her little body. So I’m thinking she should eat a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios (they say it will help reduce the cholesterol), swimming in red wine instead of milk. That should help her out some. But then again, I only PLAY a doctor on the internet, so what do I know?
Hope you enjoy Thanksgiving Godfather (and everyone else too)!!! I love the idea of bringing in booze to a dry county……………………I’m so sick of these stupid restrictions that I’ve decided I’ll probably end up in jail one day soon because I am refusing to conform to the sheeple and control freaks’ ideals of how I should live, think, speak, act…………they can all KMA…………LOL
A great book to read is “Mutant Message from Down Under” If you really ever want to see how beautiful life can/should be. I just finished it and can’t begin to express how it touched me.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone, in case I don’t get the chance after this.
I am thankful I live in FL and can ride any time I damn well please
