Obama’s Historic Win

November 6, 2008 by Godfather

You can tell a lot about someone’s character by how they react when they win or lose. Obama’s acceptance wasn’t the traditional “victory” speech. It was an acceptance speech  not about bragging but about acknowledging the work ahead. It was taking the weight & work of generations and employing everyone to help in getting the United States back on course.

No matter how you look at it, Obama winning the presidency is a positive change for the United States. It was best said in Obama’s opening line…

“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.”

It wasn’t about winning for change sake; it was about winning for positive change. It wasn’t just about winning a race; it was about winning for all races. Yes, it was about hope, but much greater accomplishments in this country have started with less.

Going forward we must spend less time fighting with each other and more time banning together for our country and future generations. America divided cannot succeed – nothing divided can. This is true regardless of who won the Whitehouse. The American people voted and we have a new leader.

Certainly there will be some people that continue to hold on to antiquated beliefs. People that refuse to look at the real world in which they now live. That is not to suggest people of a different opinion are in that category –far from it. It is the open and continued sharing of unique thoughts that make this a great country – not the shallow or close-minded.

Many have taken a positive step towards a new generation of politics. Not because they voted for Obama, but because they voted. Not because they voted for McCain, but because they acknowledge, in the end, to support the President Elect no matter what.

The world has changed. No one person is better than another. No one view is better than another. They simply come from a different set of circumstances or a different world in which their perspective was born. It is education that evolves the mind.

It has been awhile since we have focused on the future of our country – often only living for the present. It is in that vein in which I created The Slow Bleed – an opportunity to point out such things. Perhaps one day I won’t have much to write about…or at least I hope.

Even though I didn’t vote for him (or mccain either), I do like him to a degree. I have to admit to feeling some happiness when it was announced he won. I’m more than willing to give him a chance to prove his words were more than the usual political rhetoric.

At the same time, my fear is he will take us too far down the socialist road and that is what I’m keeping my eyes open for while still giving him plenty of room to prove himself.

It is my fervent wish/prayer that he be a really good president. Part of me tells me he will be and I’m clinging to that.

OH I forgot to add, I did sit up to watch the concession/acceptance speeches and found myself glad I did.

McCain’s concession speech was gracious and even though I can’t stand him, I have to give him that much.

Obama’s acceptance speech was indeed remarkable. It was both humble AND uplifting at the same time. It was full of hope and had me near tears with it…(yes, I have emotions too)….LOL

Very thoughtful and poignant article. I agree whole-heartedly. The jeers billowing from the McCain supporters during his concession speech really pissed me off. We will not progress with that type of ignorance and flagrant disrespect.

First off, I was a McCain supporter. But now that the election is over I’m rooting for President elect Obama to take us in the right direction. I think though in that support and unity that it is important not to loose our individuality (for I believe this makes America great). I’m conservative and will always back the principles and initiatives that support conservative ideals, because I believe those ideals will lead us to prosperity.

Although I agree that both liberals and conservatives need to find a respectful way to disagree, and to acknowledge when history is made regardless of party affiliation. I could imagine that the people at McCain’s concession were probably close to his election and emotionally invested, but I agree the jeering was not the right reaction.

I’m proud of America’s democracy and the historic importance of Barack Obama’s election. My prayers are with him and his administration. May he lead us well.

Great Comments Shade. I think we all hoped whomever won they would take us in the right direction.

It should be interesting to see going forward what the Senate and Congress get done. They should be in the “let’s roll up our sleeves” mode!
