Nope, Not a Quote from President Lincoln…

August 7, 2008 by Godfather

The following quote is often attributed to President Lincoln but was, in actuality, from William H. Beotchker, 1916….

During this political season lets be reminded of  these wise words.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

i’m 25 yrs old, and i’m just now starting to really appreciate politics and all the controversy. its a lot of fun, its exciting and i think i’ve finally chosen a side. its funny i ran into this site because somebody just two days ago told me it was lincoln himself that did say that, and man was i interested in the conversation we had going. so i’m just wondering, why do people believe it was pres. lincoln when it was william? did lincoln ever quote this man in a speech?

and thankyou for your site. i’m going to look around some more :)

Thanks Monette, I appreciate the comment. As I am sure you are finding out, it can be a challenge to figure out truth from fiction from opinion!

The positives that are related to the internet are also its weaknesses. Just because someone says something does not make it true - that is also how history gets re-written.

    Always seek out the truth!
