McCain’s Blind Date…Sarah Palin

McCain’s choice of Palin for the VP is both interesting and sad.

What is interesting is McCain, who likes to surprise people, chose a female running mate. McCain has a long history of surrounding himself with long-time advisors, people with experience, and people he has know for some time.

He met Palin, for the first time, six months ago – not to mention he has only spoken with her once since then – to offer he the big VP spot.

The other odd part of all this is the McCain has been touting his campaigns edge was clearly experience and how everyone on his team would share that level of experience. I guess that went out the window during a focus group when they said they needed someone to try and steal some Hillary votes.

Don’t get me wrong Palin may be a great pick, but with only a couple years under her belt it is too early to tell. Given all the choices McCain had some people were certainly surprised (When you are 72 years old and have battled cancer four times, you better be right.)

This “Hail Mary” by McCain will be interesting to see if it helps or hurts him in the election. The initial reaction among voters who wanted a woman in the White House is that they are not pleased. They felt Hillary was a sold candidate and that a “token” women is insulting. I think it is too early to say Palin is a “token” politician (she actually needs to wear out a pair of choose first in a political office). Palin may rise to be a great leader.

Not matter what happens, we have clearly crossed the line of picking the most qualified people in the room to who will look good standing next to me.

Who Should Run the United States?

I used to enjoy political conventions. Hearing all the speakers. Getting excited to hear about change in bad times or planning for our children’s future in good times.

As I get older I realize it is the same talk over and over again. No real lasting change once they get into office. Plenty of acknowledging the present but no planning for the future. All of them will lower our taxes and increase our benefits (basic Third Grade math will tell you that is not possible).

Don’t get me wrong, I still have hope. I still hope that one day someone will step up and say…

“I know it is tough right now. America is not competitive in the world marketplace. People who came to this country for jobs and opportunity now stay in their own county as the jobs have been exported there.  We need those jobs and the people back. We must learn to build our country…no, rebuild our country to compete in the world marketplace. Not as enforcers of peace, but ambassadors of a free market society.

We must re-learn self-sufficiency. Not rely on other countries for our basic needs such as food and fuel. Free Trade? Of course.  But never rely on other countries for our basic needs and livelihood. Furthermore, free trade works both ways. And never at the expense of our people and our workers. We will not trade with countries that do not accept our goods or so heavily tax them thereby reducing the balance of trade.

Lastly, we must make sure that this does not ever happen again. We must place a priority on education and our children’s future. Cutting educational programs is not saving money; it is costing us a thousand times more in the future. Our future inventors, political figures, and entrepreneurs all go through the school system that has grossly failed them in recent years. Education needs to be a right…not an option.”

The next few years are going to be tough. I am not going to tell you I am going to lower taxes, because I am not. I am going to tell you that every American, every American, is going to feel the crunch over the next few years as we right this ship and set us back on a course that leads to self sufficiency and economic stability. We are all in this together and we all must correct it. The good news is when we are done we will be stronger than we have ever been – that is the country we will hand our kids.”

Of course, this fictional person would never get voted in. Matter of fact, they would never make it to the convention.

Too bad. I would vote for them.

Who am I Blogging for Anyway?

I was recently asked about blogging in general. Why do people do it? What do you write about? Do you care if anyone actually reads it? Are bloggers narcissistic?

I figured I would, yep you guessed it, write a blog about why I blog and maybe mix in a few projections about others.

For starters as a published writer I have always enjoyed writing. My background of doing just about everything from running a fork lift to doing stand-up comedy, starting and selling businesses to being the number one air hockey player in the state; those and a host of other things left me with lots to talk about. Anyone that tells you don’t need to like writing to be a blogger either doesn’t know what a blog is or has yet to try and write anything on a consistent basis.

I started writing this blog because [Read more...]

One Last Olympic Moment…

Ok, maybe a little light hearted to start out a Monday but perhaps that is the best time to be light hearted (kind of ease our way back into the work week especially after watching the Jonathan Harris video on Friday).

Yesterday marked the end of the Olympics. It was certainly an incredible year and lots of memorable moments.

Not to be forgotten, here is one last performance from the 1988 Olympics. The performance is by “Paulette Huntinova” and not exactly “Olympic” caliber but sure to put a smile on your face.

It Must be Hard Work to be a Racist…

I have been reading several blogs lately that deal with racism. Some are very good, some are just people writing for the purpose of insulting other races.

Oftentimes I read comments that are really nothing more than a difference of opinion, yet race comes in to play. Why?

If you were to read a conversation between two people, not knowing their race, you may simply interpret the conversation as a difference of opinion. But once you know that the two people are of a different race, some people assume that all the comments within are directed to the other person’s race instead of the point they are actually discussing.

Here is what I believe…

  • No one chooses his or her race. I did not choose to be white while someone else did not choose to be black, etc, etc.
  • Everyone experiences racism directed towards them. Everyone. It is not limited to minorities.
  • Reverse-Racism is not justified…it is just racism in another direction.
  • It takes a lot more energy to hate another person than to just be neutral and see how they, as an individual, acts.
  • Racism is due to either a lack of either education or experience (sometimes both).
  • No one person is the “spokesperson” for his or her race. You cannot judge the actions of one person as representational of all.

Reverse in the (Internet) Fast Lane…

I ventured “off the grid” again last week. By “off the grid” I basically mean that I no longer had a high-speed Internet connection.

I am hooked on high-speed Internet. I want everything now and I realized that you can never go back.

Last week I was on Dial-up Internet. For those readers that don’t know what I am talking about, it is pretty much the equivalent of putting cups on two ends of a string and having someone yell information on one end – you will get the gist of it…but it is really going to take awhile.

Gandhi said, ‘There is more to life than increasing its speed”

He was right, although I don’t think he ever tried to upload a photo for a blog from a remote area in North Carolina.
