“Doomsday” Machine Ready to Start Testing

Ok, maybe not “doomsday” but the results will prove interesting when the Swiss fire up the Hadron Collider this August.
In a nutshell, Hadron is a ring of supercooled magnets (17 miles in circumference) attached to huge barrel-shaped detectors and buried 330 feet underground.
The goal is to hunt for signs of the invisible “dark matter” and “dark energy” that make up more than 95% of the universe. The Hadron could even find other dimensions.
The risk of turning this thing on?
Well, several scientists think the risk of catastrophic danger to our planet is only about one in 50 million – Hey wait, that is about the same odds as buying a lottery ticket.

If you heard extra fireworks yesterday, it may have been gun owners celebrating.
The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that Americans have the right to own guns for self-defense and hunting.
Of course, the big problem was trying to interpret the 1791 to today’s laws. The amendment reads: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
Historically the argument was that you must be part of an “organized militia” to bear guns. This ruling removes that question.
And for the bonus round…Look out D.C!
The court’s 5-4 ruling also struck down the District of Columbia’s 32-year-old ban on handguns.

Hopefully you were not personally dealing with shipping cargo across the seas but chances are, your company was and as a consumer, you paid for it.
U.S. companies fell victim to what amounted to be one of the largest price-fixing scams in airline history. The biggest culprit so far? Air France-KLM
Oh, great, now the French are really getting on my nerves. Air France-KLM agreed to pay $350M (yes, that “M” means million) of the settlement. The other airlines were Cathay Pacific Airways, Martinair-Holland, and SAS Cargo Group.
This was really slimy. The executives met repeatedly (in the US) and came up with price-fixing schemes such as raising cargo rates, fuel surcharges, and security costs for businesses and consumers. They focused on shipped goods to and from the U.S.
Previously British Airways, Korean Air, and Japan Airlines filled similar agreements as part of the investigation.
In a time when the U.S. is struggling financially our supposed allies are busy stealing from us in a consorted effort. It is time to stop aiding those countries, which are happy to take our money and business; but continue to fleece us when we are not looking.

Top NASA scientist James Hansen told congress on Monday that the earth is passing the point of no return with regards to the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
Without any changes we could expect (within a couple decades) a collapse of the ecosystem, mass extinction among animals, and a dramatic rising in sea levels.
The main culprit? The burning of fossil fuels.
Is he right?
Well, certainly we have seen our fair share of scientist step forward saying we on a dangerous path (no, Al Gore does not count).
Sen. James Inhofe said in a statement “Hanson, Gore and the media have been trumpeting man-made climate doom since the 1980’s. But Americans are not buying it.”
My thought… If we don’t believe in it does that mean is still won’t happen?

A team of US scientists claim they have made progress in the curing of advanced skin cancer.
A 52-year-old man had advanced melanoma and the researchers took cancer-fighting immune cells, made about five billion copies, then put them back.
This “supercharged” immune power went to work on the cancer. Two months later the scans showed the tumors had disappeared. Two years later…the man remains disease free.
Scientist started with melanoma because the disease is well understood (compared to some other cancers). The idea is that similar treatments may work on other cancers.
Which brings up the other question. Where do you stand on Stem Cell research?
